Chapter Fourteen
Some trust in chariots and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. Psalms 20:7
Eli knocked on the big double doors and wondered if he was doing the right thing.
“Come in lad,” Amos shouted.
Eli entered the workshop and stood in awe. There was wood everywhere, different lengths, different types and different colors. Pieces of furniture adorned the edges in various stages of development. It was obvious that Amos knew what he was doing, but it looked as if he was well overworked.
“Shut the door,” Amos called, “and come over here.”
Eli did, feeling as if he were shutting out the future instead of welcoming another one.
Amos walked across to a desk and Eli followed. The first thing he noticed was that the workshop though cluttered had order but the desk didn’t. There were invoices, papers, unopened letters and scribbled columns of figures all spread about in a haphazard manner. His fingers twitched, and his eyes roved over the mess. It would take him a while, but he could sort this.
“Who is she?” Amos asked.
“Who?”
“The girl that has you all starry-eyed and too afraid to ask her,” Amos said as he pulled over two chairs and sat down.
Eli took the other chair and turned it away from the desk. The paperwork was too distracting he must not look at it. “It’s Katie Esch.”
“Ah, I see,” Amos said. “Have you asked her out yet?”
Eli felt heat hit his cheeks and he was a little annoyed. What business was this of Amos’s? He was not here to talk about Katie. He was here to get a job so he could ask her out. “No,” he said.
“Why not?” Amos asked.
Eli wanted to shout because, but as he sat there the words sank in. Why hadn’t he asked her out? He had wanted to for over two years but she always seemed too gut for him just too far out of his reach, and now it was maybe too late.
“I understand,” Amos said. “If you knew how difficult I found it to ask Hanna out you would be laughing at me. But look at us now, married and a boppli on the way and I couldn’t be happier. So why haven’t you asked her and what are we going to do about it?”
Eli smiled maybe there was hope, after all. “She’s my best friend and I think she never thought of me that way.” Of course earlier, she had intimated that she did and he had maybe blown it?
“Well, we need to change that and we start by you asking her if you can drive her to service. Do you have a buggy you can use?”
“No, and I can’t… Jacob Glick has asked her and earlier she asked me, and I almost ran,” Eli said and the enormity of it sank in. His head dropped forward and his heart seemed to miss a beat. He had left it too late, and now he had lost her.
“Why would you do that?” Amos asked.
